HOLLAND
Holland is a former province of the Netherlands that was divided in 1840 into two distinct provinces: North Holland and South Holland.
The name of this historical region comes from the Middle Dutch “Holtland,” meaning “wooded land” (from “holt,” meaning “wood,” and “land,” meaning “land”).
Due to its historical significance, the term “Holland” is also used, by synecdoche, to refer to the entirety of the Netherlands, although this designation is not official. In 1806, the Batavian Republic was transformed into a Kingdom of Holland, entrusted to Louis Bonaparte; this is the only occasion when the term “Holland” was officially used to designate the entire Netherlands.
By a decision made in October 2019, the Dutch authorities changed their institutional terminology: starting January 1, 2020, ministries, embassies, universities, colleges, and municipalities were no longer labeled with “Holland” but instead referred to as “the Netherlands.” The country’s international communication now employs the term “the Netherlands.”
