Frequently asked questions

Where's the Green Belt?

The Green Belt surrounds the city of Ouagadougou. Here’s a map for greater clarity

- What are the objectives of the Ouagadougou Green Belt?

Combating the advance of the desert is the main reason for creating the Green Belt around Ouagadougou. It should help to stabilize the ecological balance through a land development program and the implementation of integrated projects. The aim of the agro-forestry system is to restore the vegetation cover.

The ground cover reduces the soil’s exposure to the sun’s rays. With a closed plant mat. the risks of erosion and soil impoverishment are reduced. The Green Belt would thus enable soil regeneration.

With pollution of all kinds, people’s living conditions are deteriorating year on year. To remedy this problem, the Green Belt should act as a windbreak and a source of atmospheric purification.

In 1976, at the request of the Voltaic government, the German forestry mission began with the establishment of the Green Belt, which was to have multiple functions:

  • City protection to reduce the influence of wind and dust (harmattan).
  • Urban planning functions as a space for rest and recreation that limits disorderly urban growth.
  • Wood production while guaranteeing a permanent stand
  • Plant cover function to combat wind and water erosion, especially towards the dams, Ouagadougou’s main water reservoir.
  • Socially and economically significant job and revenue creation.
  • Combined agroforestry cultivation for food supply and nutrition.
What are the economic benefits of the Green Belt?
